Less
populated than the Northern nd southern parts
of kefalonia the Lixouri peninsula is well worth
exploring.
Once you have left behind Lixouri town itself,
you will drive through many pretty, sparsely
populated villages. The peninsula has some excellent
sandy beaches, many with golden red sand and
dramatic cliffs, like xi and Megas Lakos..Xi
has sunbeds and a taverna, and busses run from
Lixouri during the main summer season.

The
northern part of the penisula is remote but
uncrowded, we saw lots of snakes and goats in
this area as there was very little traffic.
As
stunning as the famous Myrtos beach, Petani
around 14km from Lixouri is shingle and pebbles
mostly and a little painful on the feet, but
the scenery is beautiful.
Do
take care on the road down to Petani as there
are some splendid hairpin bends to negotiate
whilst you are trying to take in the magnificent
views below! There are two simple tavernas at
Petani beach, offering salads, grills and fresh
fish. Sunbeds are available during the main
season.
In
our oppinion Petani is as scenic as Myrtos and
is certainly a safer option if you want to swim.

The
road from Argostoli to Lixouri is winding and
rather hairy, particularly on the return journey,
as sat inches form dramatic drops to my right,
I could not help but notice the lack of crash
barriers!
A
small ferry leaves the ports of Argostoli and
Lixouri on the hour and half hour and costs
about 6 Euros for 2 passengers and the car,
its a pleasant 20 minute cruise and saves a
long drive.
The
square near to the harbour front of Lixouri
is pleasant with a number of tavernas, and the
town had a number of rather attractive buildings
including the library.

Ag.Spyridon,
reached via the mountain village of Atheras
is a pretty little cove.
This
was a nice place to swim, as the water was warm
and sheltered and safe for children. We spotted
lots of small flatfish hidden in the shallows.

The
Lixouri peninsula offers varied and dramatic
scenery, peaceful villages and miles of red sandy
beaches. You will need your own transport to
explore.
It
is rumoured that a golf/leisure facility is
planed for the Lixouri area, so enjoy this area
now whilst it remains peaceful and laid back.
